Independent Movement is a long term collaboration between artists Gesa Piper and Alm Gnista. Starting in 2017 as a reaction to the 100 years celebration of Finlands independence, and the strong right-wing nationalist and fascist movements the celebration inspired.
At the core of Independent Movement is the interdependency embedded in independence. No-one and no-thing moves alone. Seemingly independent bodies are always entangled and co-constituted by the movements, histories, and presences of others – human and more-than-human alike. Independent Movement explores this paradox through collaborative movement, resisting narratives of singularity and purity that often underpin nationalist ideology.
Rather than celebrating isolation or autonomy, the work insists on exploring shared vulnerability, relational agency, and the invisible threads that bind us, asking: What does it mean to move independently when independence is always already a collective act?
Independent Movement unfolds as an ongoing inquiry – a choreography of co-existence where art becomes a site for entangled becoming.
